The Mediterranean’s best kept secret

There is something magical about the original North Cyprus that once you experience it, you will never forget. It is known as “the Mediterranean’s best kept secret”. Many of its visitors fall in love with the unique atmosphere and flair there and therefore return year after year to explore the island’s rich and varied history, pristine landscapes, rich culture, relaxed lifestyle and fantastic climate and its very hospitable people. Very few other destinations offer the unique experiences you will find in North Cyprus.

In this charming former British colony, Europeans and those coming from the Middle East all feel equally at home. Luxury properties are extremely cheap compared to other similar destinations. English is widely spoken and the crime rate is very low. Overseas visitors benefit from new world-class private medical care, a brand new golf course with the highest quality standards, marinas and other entertainment facilities.

How to get to Northern Cyprus?

Cyprus is now a major international centre with easy connections throughout Europe and to the Middle East from the north and south of the island. Larnaca, Paphos and Erkan International Airports offer regular flights from all over the world. You can choose from low-cost airlines and airlines with the highest quality, such as Wizz Air, Ryanair, Lufthansa, Aegean Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Emirates and British Airways, which offer regular flights. If you decide to land in Larnaka, in the south of the island, it is only a short taxi ride across the border to the north of the island. There are also ferries that ferry cars and passengers from the mainland in Turkey to Kyrenia, mainly in the summer months.

A 90-day tourist visa is usually standard and issued to almost all nationalities on arrival.

What should you visit in North Cyprus?

Whenever and wherever you visit, you will be enchanted by the indescribable mountain scenery, the local culture and the pristine landscapes.

Most visitors are initially drawn to the Kyrenia area on the north coast.

Kyrenia, with its luxury and boutique hotels, ancient castles, exclusive restaurants and glittering harbour, is known as “the jewel in the Mediterranean” and is a must-see on your first visit to the island. Kyrenia is located on the coast with the impressive “Five Finger Mountain” in the background. At the top of it is the famous St Hilarion Castle. Nearby is Bellapais, made famous by Lawrence Durrell’s Bitter Lemons of Cyprus. It features an enchanting monastery which has become an important cultural and musical centre in the area. Nearby is the new English School of Kyrenia.

To the east of Kyrenia are the villages of Ozanköy and Catalköy and this is the most popular area for many overseas visitors who have chosen to settle near Kyrenia. There are no beaches directly in Kyrenia. However, just west of the town you will find Escape Beach and to the east of the town you will find Algadi Turtle Beach. These are the sandy beaches closest to the town.

The north coast is not known for its beaches. However, if you move further east of the town towards the Kyrenium Golf Course in areas such as Esentepe and Bahceli, you will find charming bathing coves, small bays and natural hillsides at the foot of the Five Finger Mountains, which offer fantastic sweeping views over the Mediterranean from an elevation.

Even further east is the unspoilt Karpaz Peninsula with its miles of sandy beaches and charming eco-tourism areas. Another castle, called Kantara, is located on top of the mountains and is an attraction in this area. So is the brand new Karpaz Marina with its yachts that regularly arrive from Turkey and other Mediterranean resorts.

The east coast, located to the north of Famagusta, is known for its excellent sandy beaches. Bafra, at the entrance to the Karpaz Peninsula, offers luxury hotels and resorts with 5 stars. Further south, the charming port of Bogaz is definitely worth a visit. Near it, you will find many top-quality holiday accommodations. History buffs head to the east coast to explore the ancient Roman city and ruins of Salamis. Many then head south to see the city of Famagusta and its surrounding walls, which date back to the Venetians. You will also find modern shops and restaurants there.

The capital, Nicosia, is a frontier town, bursting with history and charm and with its many new universities and hospitals. However, being in the centre of the island, it does not attract as many investors looking to invest in luxury properties. The same is true for holidaymakers and vacationers. However, it is excellent for a day trip and shopping.

North Cyprus for holidays

Either you enjoy golfing or sailing or you relax on the Golden Beach or explore the charming towns, North Cyprus is the perfect place for any kind of holiday. All 4 seasons in North Cyprus have their own charm, although the busiest time is from April to November.

When should you visit North Cyprus?

At the beginning of spring, many visitors come to play golf or go hiking and see Cyprus at its greenest. Nature lovers in particular come to see rare wild flowers and birds. Orchids and other native flora and fauna are celebrated in some spring festivals in villages. It is also the perfect weather to visit the many ancient ruins and historical sites.

In late spring, music lovers enjoy the world-class Bellapais International Classical Music Festival held at the scenic Bellapais Abbey Hall.

In early summer, local oranges and strawberries can be picked and enjoyed at the many markets that overflow with an array of local produce. When Cyprus’ hot summer reaches its peak in July and August, people flock to the beach or relax by the swimming pool. Diving, surfing and water sports, as well as boating along the coast, are available throughout the summer.

In autumn, the heat decreases somewhat, but the sea can remain warm until November or even December. During autumn, olives are harvested and dates are once again celebrated in multi-coloured local festivities.

In winter, North Cyprus sees snow in the distance on the peaks of the Troodos Mountains and in February and March you can even ski in the early morning and then, after just an hour’s drive down the mountain, you can sunbathe by the sea in the afternoon.

North Cyprus for retirement

Many visitors find it very easy to imagine life in North Cyprus. There are currently over 10,000 British, European and Middle Eastern nationals and other international expatriates living here. They live happily alongside an estimated 300,000 Turkish-speaking locals.

One reason many choose to settle here is the fantastic Mediterranean weather – out of 365 days a year, you can expect sunshine on 340 of them. Cyprus’ Mediterranean climate is close to subtropical and is usually at least 10 degrees warmer than the UK and Northern Europe and 10 degrees cooler than the Gulf States, every day of the year.

Leisure activities in North Cyprus

The new Korineum Golf & Beach Resort boasts an immaculate 18-hole golf course with outstanding mountain and sea views. It is often preferred to golf courses in the south (this is also true of the famous Aphrodite Hills Golf Course) because it was built to offer more challenges.

There are 3 marinas: the traditional Kyrenia marina, the new Delta marina at the new Kyrenia harbour and the brand new Karpaz Gate marina on the Karpaz peninsula. You will also find many diving centres, centres for water sports and also paragliding and many other recreational pleasures.

Buying Property in North Cyprus

According to FORBES, Northern Cyprus Iskele region ist the “FIRST CHOICE” for the best beach front buys of 2021.

And FORBES is absolutely right! It makes the Northern Cypriots proud to see their home island being recognized as what it is: A fantastic location to invest in YOUR FUTURE holiday home close to the beach.

Northern Cyprus, located in the Mediterranean Sea between Europe and Turkey, is not at the top of most Americans’ list, but this former British colony has a lot to offer. This is the best of the Mediterranean at a fraction the cost of living the Med life elsewhere. Northern Cyprus is also a safe, welcoming destination with developed tourism infrastructure, including clubs, casinos, and luxury hotels, all more affordable than their counterparts in Germany, France or Italy.

In addition to the low cost of everything, the main attractions are the sand and the sea. It’s possible to own an ocean-view condo with direct beach access for as little as $75,000 at current exchange rates (real estate in Northern Cyprus trades in British pounds). It’s also possible to buy with developer financing, meaning low capital requirements up-front.

Look specifically along Iskele (pronounced ee-skeh-leh), on the eastern coast. This region is known for the nicest and longest stretch of beach on the island, as well as its seafood specialties.

Retirement in Northern Cyprus would mean a life outside the more familiar comfort zones of Europe and the Americas. If you’re up for an adventure at this stage of your life while stretching your retirement budget to buy you a bona-fide luxury standard of life on one of the world’s most beautiful stretches of coastline, Northern Cyprus should be at the top of your list.

The best deals we’re seeing here are in pre-construction projects at coastal resorts where your investment can be fully turn-key. Prices start from about $75,000, and net rental yields are in the range of 11% to 15%.

The good news is that as the years have passed, various new regulations have been passed which have made a sensible new property purchase in North Cyprus increasingly safe and worry-free – with no more risks with a North Cyprus property than in any other overseas property destination.
